Gluten free Asian Style Burgers heavily seasoned with warm spices, soy sauce, toasty sesame oil, ginger, garlic, a little heat and creamy peanut butter are a personal favorite. I like to generously slather spicy mayo on a gluten free bun, then top the burger with quickly pickled veggies and fresh cilantro. A fabulous twist on the classic burger!
Quick Pickling Method
I love a little crunch of veggies and pickles on a meaty sandwich. It helps to lighten and brighten up each bite. Fortunately you can achieve great pickling flavor without a time consuming process.
Begin by dissolving sugar and salt in hot water and rice vinegar. Add in grated carrots and daikon radish along with finely sliced onion. Below, there is a photo of a daikon radish. It is a large radish with a mild bite. If by any chance, you have an aversion to one of those ingredients, you can mix and match to your preferences as long as the end result is 1 cup of ingredients.
Easy Spicy Mayo
The fatty, rich and creamy mayonnaise is my favorite condiment for burgers. However, it needs to be balanced by acidity. In this recipe, the quick pickling of the carrots, radish and onion serves that purpose. To add a little kick of heat and flavor, adding a touch (or more) of red curry paste ties all of the layers of flavors together and adds a bit of needed moisture to the bun.
Season the Patties
So many of the seasonings and spices that we associate with Asian foods are stirred together to season the ground beef. Soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, 5 spice powder, brown sugar, red curry paste and peanut butter easily combine in a large bowl to create a thick flavorful mixture. The meat and fresh cilantro are added in and stirred until it is combined well.
Shape & Cook
Portion out the meat and shape into patties. Cook in a frying pan or on the grill. Nothing more to it!
Layer Up the Asian Style Burgers!
Spread a generous amount of the easy spicy mayo on the bun. Set a burger on the bun, top with the pickled veggies and some fresh cilantro. No need for ketchup, mustard or cheese because the other layers already have the acid/fat/heat/salt balance factored in.
