Basil Awesome Sauce

basil awesome sauce

Basil Awesome Sauce is just what it sounds like.  The freshness of the basil, pumped up with fresh garlic and olive oil (only use the good stuff) is a great combination.  Just simple fresh ingredients coming together and the result is a fantastic compliment to grilled meat, chicken, seafood, pasta and vegetables.  It turns an ordinary dish into something really awesome!  Of course, that’s how it got it’s name;-)

Although it tastes a lot like a basil pesto, it is made without nuts and cheese.  Therefore, this Basil Awesome Sauce is keto, paleo and aip friendly.  In fact, I started making this when my husband and I were on a strict autoimmune protocol (aip) diet and we got hooked.  Now we almost always have a jar of Awesome Sauce in the fridge.  There are several versions of it, if you want to check them out- Parsley, Mint and Cilantro.

Easy to Make

Basil Awesome Sauce is very easy to make.  However, if you don’t like biting into little pieces of fresh garlic, you’ll want to blend the garlic to a smooth paste with a little olive oil.  This results in a more mellow garlic flavor.  I use a smoothie maker for this step.  Then transfer the garlic paste to the blender.  Add in the basil, salt, pepper and remaining olive oil and pulse the blender to get the consistency you like.  If you don’t mind the bits of garlic, throw everything into the blender at once.  That’s all there is to it!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves (well packed)
  • 2-3 cloves fresh garlic (2 should be good, but add more if you really like garlic!)
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ¼ cup good quality olive oil

Instructions

  • If you don't like small pieces of garlic in your sauce, start by blending the olive oil & garlic in a smoothie maker or blender until the garlic is pureed almost smooth. If you don't mind small pieces of garlic, skip this step.
  • Pull basil leaves off of the stems, throw the stems out and rinse the leaves. Add all ingredients to blender.
  • Blend or pulse a few times until the herbs are chopped up to the size you like. This usually takes 15-30 seconds. You may need to scrape down the sides to get all of the basil leaves chopped up.
  • Serve with pasta, meats, vegetables or seafood. Everything tastes better with a little of this on it! Store in a sealed container in the fridge for 2-3 days. It will start to brown as the days go on due to air getting to it. It should remain good to eat for up to a week.
