If you are looking for an extra special gluten free apple pie for your holiday table, look no further. This Ginger Apple Pie has a fresh twist on the traditional pie with the addition of grated fresh ginger and cardamom. Let me tell you, the ginger pops! It will have your taste buds singing. Also, by using a mix of sweet and tart apples, the pie isn't overly sweet. Which means that you can have a second piece without feeling icky from too much sugar!
About the Crust
For this recipe you can use a homemade crust like my Gluten Free Flaky Pie Crust or go with a store-bought like Whole Foods Gluten Free Bakehouse frozen pie crust. Both are made with eggs and dairy. If you want to make this vegan, try the crust in my Vegan Pumpkin Pudding Pie recipe. It is quick to pull together and will be a yummy addition to the Ginger Apple Pie.
About the Apples
Cutting your apples into similar size pieces is important so that they cook at the same speed. Check out the gizmo I use to peel, slice and core my apples in the pics below. I use this when I make Apple Crisp too. A viewer suggested it and it has made a big improvement on my recipes. The consistency and look of the desserts is better when the apples cook at the same speed. I don't usually suggest buying gadgets that won't get used, but if you make a lot of recipes with apples, this can be a huge help!

Ginger Apple Pie
Ingredients
For the Pie Filling:
- 1 Gluten Free Flaky Pie Crust - or store-bought frozen
- 6 medium apples - 4 granny smith, 2 honeycrisp
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom
- 2 tablespoon cornstarch
Crumb Topping:
- 1 cup gluten free old fashioned oats - I use Bob's Red Mill brand
- ½ cup Gluten Free flour blend - I use Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Baking Flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ginger
- dash Salt
- ½ cup melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees, note that you will be turning the temp down to 350 part way through baking.
For the Pie Filling:
- Wash, peel, core and cut apples in even size pieces. You can slice or dice them, the shape doesn’t matter, keeping them similar size does, so that they cook at the same speed.
- Put apples in a large bowl. Add all of the remaining ingredients and give it all a good stir. Make sure that all of the apples are well coated with all of the ingredients.
- Put apple mixture into your prepared frozen pie crust.
- Sprinkle the crumb topping on top of the apples.
- Place on a cookie sheet in the oven (to catch any delicious liquid that might escape while it bakes). Bake for 15 minutes at 375 then turn the heat down to 350 and continue baking for an additional 35-45 minutes or until a knife pierces easily through the apples. Watch to be sure it doesn’t brown too much. If the crust starts getting dark, cover it loosely with aluminum foil while it finishes baking.
Crumb Topping
- Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl until well combined.
- Add a little melted butter at a time until it resembles damp sand and small crumbles begin to form. Set aside.
