Fortnite Drop Cake

Jan 26, 2019 · 2 Comments

Yes.  Gaming is a big deal in my house right now.  I hate to admit it, but I have learned to embrace it.  The proof?  This Fortnite Drop Cake for my son's birthday.  He described what he was hoping for.  A "drop box" that would spill candy "boogie bombs" when we cut into it.  I figured I would give it a shot.  After all, we had just made a Slime Surprise Cake for my daughter's birthday a few months before...  I crossed my fingers that I could pull this one off too! lol!

I was clueless about the details of the game, so I started doing some research.  There were so many cool things about the game to use for the theme of the party... V-Bucks, Med Kits, Boogie Bombs, Slurp Juice and Shield Potion.  Admittedly, I started to understand the appeal of the game and got really excited about making the cake too!

The Cake

You can make any type of cake as long as it has a firm texture.  Meaning, I wouldn't use an angle food cake that is very soft and sponge-like.  What ever you choose needs to hold up to stacking.  I began with baking four 9 inch square gluten free Pillsbury Funfetti cakes (yes, I used a mix.  I don't always have time to bake from scratch either!)  After they were baked and removed from the pans (line the pans with parchment paper for easy removal), I put filling on 3 cakes and stacked them.  At this point, I would suggest stacking the cakes on the serving plate.  I forgot to do this and it was a scary moment when I made the move.  Eeek!!! Wouldn't want you to go through that! lol!

Stacking the Cake

To keep the cakes from sliding or leaning, I pushed thick smoothie straws in the corners, but about 1 ½ inches in from each side.  Then cut the straws so they would sit just below the top of the cake.

I leveled the top where needed.  Then measured the height of  the stacked cakes.  It was about 7 inches.  So then I cut the sides down to 7 inches so that it would be a square box.  Using a long bread knife, I carefully cut a small square through the middle of the cake, down to the bottom.  I pulled the excess cake out of the middle using tongs.  Be sure to save the top square of cake without breaking it apart so you can plug the hole later.

The Final Steps

The rest is pretty straight forward from here.  Put a skim/crumb coat of frosting all over the cake and chill it in the fridge for about an hour.  Then pour candy in the hole, top with the reserved square of cake, put the final coat of frosting on and cover with blue fondant.  I used cookie cutters to cut the letters out of white fondant.  I stuck them on with a little frosting.

I attached four strings to toothpicks on one end and tied them to the bottom of a helium filled yellow balloon on the other end.  Then I stuck the toothpicks into the top corners of the cake.  And it was done!

The Big Reveal

I hated to cut into it, but of course, we did.  The candy spilled out just as we hoped and the cake was a hit!  It certainly took some work and planning to pull the Fortnite Drop Cake together, but it was all worth it to see the happiness it brought my son and his friends.  Great time and great memories for sure:-)

    Thanks for your ideas!
Could you tell me what the boogie bombs are?

Hi Malonnie! Great question!! Boogie Bombs in the Fortnite game are thrown like grenades, but any players inside the blast radius are forced to dance. When boogie dancing, the players are prevented from building, firing weapons, or using items. I used candy coated chocolates (sometimes called "sixlets") as "Boogie Bombs" inside the cake. I hope this helps!
